Colon Cancer Prevention

Colon cancer prevention activities are made known to the people by both the government and private agencies. Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers being suffered by many people today. Not only this, but it is also the number one killer cancer in the world. Surprisingly though, it is one of the most preventable cancers ever to exist.

In order to help lessen its occurrence, here are six preventive steps:

Have a Healthy Diet

The first colon cancer prevention activity is diet. Colon cancer cells can develop when you eat foods that are unhealthy such as those that contain high fat and cholesterol levels and even carcinogenic foods such as grilled foods. These foods do not make the cancer cells or first handedly give you the cancer cells. What they do is with their accumulation, they will cause the normal cells to mutate, develop at a very fast rate, and become cancer cells.

In colon cancer, you need to eat a balanced diet in each meal. Avoid the foods that can trigger the cells into becoming cancer cells. Eat foods that contain high levels of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that you and your body. Make sure that you eat a healthy dose of fiber. This is done by eating at least 5 servings of fruit per day. This will help your body efficiently and easily clean the bowels. Not only will this prevent colon cancer, but it will also help you prevent constipation and hemorrhoids.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

For some reason, when a person is obese, he or she is at higher risk for developing colon cancer. More so, obese men are even at a higher risk for developing the cancer.

As part of colon cancer prevention activity, having a balanced diet is a must. Daily caloric intake must not exceed energy output. However, everything should be balanced. Your intake of food should not be less than your energy expenditure. Protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake should also be according to the amounts recommended for your body mass index.

Take Aspirin

Many experts have said that aspirin contains properties that can help prevent the development of colon cancer. Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs help by reducing the size of polyps that are in the colon. With this, it is able to do a great part in colon cancer prevention since most of the time harmless polyps develop into cancer cells later on. Another way that aspirin can be of help is by stopping the cancer cells from multiplying further. This is said to be very helpful especially when the cancer is still in the early stages. In this case, aspirin is used not as a prevention method but as a treatment.

Get an Active Lifestyle

It has been found out that to prevent colon cancer, a sedentary lifestyle should be avoided. To do this, exercise regularly. If you do not have enough time to exercise, make sure that you do things that make you move a lot.

Having an active lifestyle will give anybody a lot of benefits. Not only will you be able to prevent colon cancer from touching your body, but you will also become fit and healthy. Also, with an active lifestyle, you will be able to prevent other diseases that are caused by being overweight or obese such as heart diseases and arthritis.

Stop Smoking

Another colon cancer prevention activity is to stop smoking. Smoking contains a lot of risks more than anybody can think of. In fact, it is the cause of a great number of diseases- a number that is growing every year as researcher found new illnesses that are linked or caused by cigarette smoking. One of the many diseases it can cause is colon cancer.

As it is, smoking tobacco can cause colon cancer in two ways. First is that the inhaled nicotine is carcinogenic. It can travel from the nose to the colon thereby triggering the normal cells to turn into cancer cells. The second is that the tobacco smoke is found to increase polyp size thereby increasing the risk of developing cancer.

Prevent any radiation exposure

Any kind of radiation is bad especially when there is increased exposure to it. Radiation produces an effect to the body where fast dividing and growing cells are killed. This is why it is also used as cancer treatment.

The cells in the colon are also dividing fast because of the function of the organ. By radiation exposure, these cells have great possibility of turning into cancer cells.
